'I had an implant fitted to replace a front tooth which had been badly damaged in a horseriding accident - I'd had it built up with a cap, but it had been wobbly for years and kept coming off,' she says.Īmanda had the implant fitted a year ago at a cost of £2,750. Amanda Pendry, 44, a model from Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, was one of the first patients in Britain to have the treatment. One of the biggest advantages of the treatment is that patients avoid wearing temporary dentures which can look unnatural and may loosen and fall out. 'However, because everything is done in one appointment, we get better aesthetic results.' A two-year study on 28 patients has found the procedure to have a 96 per cent success rate. 'Patients need to be careful not to bite on the implant for at least two months because it is vulnerable. 'We have worked out a way in which the patient can have the titanium implant, a metal post and a crown fitted in a single appointment,' says Dr Norton. In the new procedure, several months of work are condensed into 90 minutes. A natural-looking artificial tooth is then fitted.' 'After about six months, the denture is removed and a metal post is inserted into the titanium root. During this time, a plastic denture is fitted and is stuck with adhesive to teeth on either side of the gap. 'They are left there for three to six months while they integrate with bone. 'Traditionally, titanium roots are inserted in place of a missing or extracted tooth in the bone beneath the gum,' says Dr Norton.
